Upcoming Electric Vehicles in 2022

21 December 2021

It’s an exciting time in the electric vehicle (EV) space, as the price points of personal EVs continue to drop and adoption is gaining momentum thanks to cheaper batteries, a more robust charging network, and substantial government incentives. Looking ahead, there are upwards of 150 brand new EVs made by 46 different manufacturers expected to be released to the public between 2022-2024. Keeping track of so many new, cutting-edge options in the EV market can be a daunting task. Below are just a few manufacturers and models we are excited about:

Rivian: R1S SUV

With a blockbuster IPO that ended it’s first day as a publicly traded company valued at almost $88 billion, Rivian Automotive Inc. looks like it could become a formidable player in the EV space. The R1S is Rivian’s featured all-electric SUV that boasts a 135kWh battery capacity, an EPA-estimated 316 miles of range (when paired with 21” wheels), a 0-60 time of 3 seconds, a tow capacity of up to 7,700 lbs., and the ability to rock crawl at 100% grade (according to R1S - Rivian). The R1S also has a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $70,000, which is to be expected of an SUV of its size in comparison to its gas-powered equivalents. Only time will tell whether or not the R1S lives up to the hype, but for now, Rivian is enjoying it’s spot as one of the top 10 biggest automotive companies in the world by market capitalization.

Ford: F150 Lightning Pick-Up

The highly anticipated release of the fully electric Ford F150 Lightning is set for this Spring, 2022. So far, the excitement is evident: Ford recently reported that the cumulative number of F150 Lightning reservations has topped 160,000 - interestingly, CEO Jim Farley stated that about 75% of those customers were new to Ford. Of course, reservations do not always translate to sales, and how well the F150 Lightning will perform in both sales (and on the road) remains to be seen. Regardless, the numbers around the electric version of America’s favorite car are certainly eye-opening. Some of the most notable specs featured on the F150 Lightning Pro Extended Edition (as seen on 2022 Ford® F-150 Lightning Electric Truck |All Electric and All F-150) include a battery capacity of 131 kWh, an EPA range of 300 miles, a 0-60 speed of 4.5 seconds, a maximum tow capacity of 10,000 lbs., and an MSRP starting at just $39,974 for the most basic model.

Lucid Motors: Air Luxury Sedan

Lucid Motors, formerly known as Atieva, underwent a rebranding in 2016 with a renewed focus on developing fully electric, high-performing luxury sedans manufactured in Casa Grande, Arizona. According to its website (Lucid Air | Lucid Motors), the Lucid Air is the “longest range, fastest charging luxury electric car in the world.” Current specs indicate the official EPA range of the Lucid Air is a whopping 520 miles, with a Ferrari shattering 1,111 horsepower, approximately 20 minutes to charge 300 miles, and a 0-60 speed of 2.5 seconds that puts most coupes to shame. This would indeed make the Lucid Air the champion of the range wars, and a formidable competitor in just about every other aspect of luxury EV sedan performance. Orders recently opened for the Lucid Air - watching its progression in the EV market over the next year will captivate many EV shoppers and analysts, especially those concerned with range anxiety’s hold on the market.
